Masdar City is an emerging global hub for renewable energy and clean technologies that positions companies located here at the heart of this growing industry. A place where businesses can thrive and innovation can flourish, Masdar is a modern Arabian city that, like its forerunners, is in tune with its surroundings.
It is a community where cutting-edge cleantech research, pilot projects, building materials and technology testing, and construction of some of the world’s most sustainable buildings is currently is ongoing. Masdar City offers a fertile environment that inspires creativity and growth to organisations operating in this strategic and dynamic sector.
As a magnet for talent, financial capital and entrepreneurship in the fast-evolving renewable energy and cleantech industry, Masdar City provides a unique competitive advantage to companies, organisations and ancillary service providers operating in the city.
As an industry cluster, the city creates a dynamic, vibrant, international and entrepreneurial community that offers numerous benefits, including potential access to capital, a critical mass of sector knowledge, a large pool of high-quality talent, and a launching point into local, regional and international markets.
Masdar City serves as an open technology platform that gives partner companies an unmatched opportunity to develop, test and validate their technologies in a large scale, real-world environment – and in particular, with consideration to the region’s climate conditions and consumption patterns.

Power will come through a combination of sources, including photovoltaics, concentrated solar power and the Abu Dhabi grid, while thermal heat energy is being piloted for use in cooling.
Energy consumption will be reduced through a range of passive and active technologies, including smart appliances, metres and grids, building management systems and building design and orientation. Sophisticated, state-of-the-art conservation processing and reuse systems will reduce water consumption, and provide irrigation for landscaping and crop production.
Waste will be processed, recycled and composted. Transportation within Masdar City will primarily rely on electric buses, electric passenger cars and other clean-transportation solutions, with the design of the city allowing individuals to live and work without the need for a personal vehicle.
Masdar City is one of five integrated units of Masdar, a new kind of energy company based in Abu Dhabi that takes a holistic approach to the renewable energy and clean technology industry. Masdar advances the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions.
Masdar integrates research, development and innovation with investment, sustainable production, deployment and export, and is a supporting pillar of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the emirate’s economy as it transitions from a natural resource-based economy to one that is largely knowledge-based.
The company serves as a link between today’s fossil fuel economy and the energy economy of the future – developing the “greenprint” for how we will live and work tomorrow. Masdar is backed by the stability and reputation of the Mubadala Development Company, an investment vehicle of the government of Abu Dhabi.
